Museum extension: architectural model beside a listed building

A detailed BIM model and drawing set for a gallery extension that had to tie in precisely with an existing museum building.

About the project

New gallery, old neighbour

The design added a new gallery wing with angular forms alongside an existing museum. Floor levels, openings and facade lines had to align with the old building exactly.

The practice needed an accurate architectural model to coordinate with consultants and to produce planning and tender drawings.

What we delivered

  • Architectural BIM model
  • Existing building interface
  • Plans and sections
  • Elevations
  • Facade setting-out
  • Sheet set
  • Complex geometry

Sloping walls and folded roofs did not follow a simple grid.

  • Existing interfaces

New floors had to meet old levels within tight tolerances.

  • Planning deadline

Drawings were needed for a committee date.

Our process

From brief to coordinated model in six steps

How the work was planned, modeled, checked and handed over.

  1. 01

    Brief & standards

Scope, LOD, template and naming agreed at kick-off.

  2. 02

    Model set-up

Shared coordinates, levels, grids and worksets created.

  3. 03

    Modeling

Each discipline modeled to the agreed level of detail.

  4. 04

    Coordination

Federated model checked and clashes grouped by level and trade.

  5. 05

    Review & update

Comments resolved and models updated between meetings.

  6. 06

    Issue

Models, reports and sheets issued in the client’s formats.

Our solution

Geometry built to be drawn

Complex forms were modeled with adaptive families and reference planes so plans, sections and elevations could be cut cleanly from the model.

  • 0Sheets from the model
  • 0 wksBrief to issue
  • 0Design options tested
  • Adaptive families

Folded roof and wall panels controlled by a few parameters.

  • Interface model

The existing building modeled where the new wing connects.

  • Sheets from one model

Every drawing cut from the model, so changes flowed through.

  • Option studies

Alternative facades tested quickly for the design team.
