Hospital outpatient wing: services captured from laser scans

Existing ductwork, pipework and plant rooms modeled from laser scans so engineers could design a services upgrade without disrupting a working hospital.

About the project

A live building full of services

An engineering consultant was designing new ventilation and medical gas services for an outpatient wing that had to stay open throughout.

Existing drawings did not show decades of alterations, so the plant rooms and ceiling voids were laser scanned and sent to us for modeling.

What we delivered

  • Existing ductwork model
  • Pipework and valves
  • Plant room equipment
  • Cable containment routes
  • Ceiling void sections
  • Deviation notes
  • Dense ceiling voids

Services were stacked several layers deep in narrow corridors.

  • Infection control

Site visits had to be kept to a minimum.

  • Partial scan coverage

Some areas could only be scanned from one side.

Our process

From point cloud to deliverables in six steps

How the programme ran, from receiving the scan to issuing the final files.

  1. 01

    Scan check

Registration, coverage and file formats checked on receipt.

  2. 02

    Scope & set-up

LOD, levels, grids and tolerance agreed; client template loaded.

  3. 03

    Modeling & drafting

Elements drawn floor by floor against the point cloud.

  4. 04

    Weekly review

Finished areas shared with the client for comment.

  5. 05

    QA & deviation check

Independent review against the point cloud before issue.

  6. 06

    Handover

Files issued in the client’s formats with a short assumptions note.

Our solution

Existing services, modeled honestly

Every system was modeled against the point cloud, and any area the scanner could not see was marked clearly so the design team knew what was measured and what was assumed.

  • 0 kmOf services modeled
  • 0 wksScan to handover
  • 0Return site visits
  • Modeled to the scan

Ducts, pipes and containment placed on the point cloud.

  • System by system

Each service on its own system type for easy filtering.

  • Assumed areas marked

Hidden sections flagged rather than guessed.

  • Design-ready files

Models handed over on the consultant’s template.
