About the project

Character that has to be recorded

A surveying practice had scanned a listed hotel ahead of a major refurbishment. The conservation officer required accurate measured drawings before any design work could be approved.

Walls were out of plumb, floors stepped between wings and the street facade carried detailed stonework.

What we delivered

  • Floor plans for every level
  • Building sections
  • Street and courtyard elevations
  • Facade detail drawings
  • Roof plan
  • Survey notes
  • Uneven construction

Few walls were straight, square or plumb.

  • Ornate facades

Cornices and window surrounds needed careful tracing.

  • Conservation review

Drawings had to satisfy the conservation officer.

  1. 01

    Scan check

Registration, coverage and file formats checked on receipt.

  2. 02

    Scope & set-up

LOD, levels, grids and tolerance agreed; client template loaded.

  3. 03

    Modeling & drafting

Elements drawn floor by floor against the point cloud.

  4. 04

    Weekly review

Finished areas shared with the client for comment.

    Handover

Files issued in the client’s formats with a short assumptions note.

Our solution

Accuracy and character

A tolerance was agreed at the start; inside it walls were drawn straight, outside it they followed the scan, with every deviation noted.

  • 0Drawings issued
  • 0 wksScan to issue
  • ± 0 mmDrawing tolerance
  • Agreed tolerance

Clear rules for when to straighten and when to follow the scan.

  • Traced ornament

Mouldings and stonework profiles taken from the point cloud.

  • Surveyor’s standards

Layers, line weights and title blocks to the practice’s template.

  • Notes for conservation

Alterations and assumptions recorded on the drawings.
