Layer standards that keep drawing sets consistent across teams

A simple layer and naming convention stops revisions from turning into detective work.

When three people work on one drawing set, the layer list is often the first thing to drift. A small, written convention keeps revisions quick and files easy to hand over.

Why layers still matter

Layers control what plots, what freezes in viewports and what other consultants can switch off. A messy layer list turns a five-minute revision into an afternoon of hunting for the right line.

A simple naming convention

  • Discipline first. A-, S-, M-, E- so every file sorts the same way.
  • Element next. WALL, DOOR, GRID, DIMS, TEXT.
  • Status last. NEW, EXST, DEMO for refurbishment work.

Keeping it enforced

Put the layers in the template, not in a document nobody opens. Purge and audit before every issue, and use a layer translator when files arrive from outside the team. A quick standards check takes minutes and saves the whole set.

Conclusion

Agree the convention once, build it into the template and check it at every issue. Consistent layers are what make a drawing set feel like it came from one office.
