Five ways better renders help architects win planning approval

Context, daylight and honest materials: what planners and clients actually look for.

  1. Show the context, not just the building
  2. Use honest materials
  3. Choose the right light
  4. Match key views
  5. Keep the set consistent

Planning officers and committees are not reading your drawings the way you do. Good renders close that gap and answer the questions they are too polite to ask.

1. Show the context, not just the building

Neighbouring buildings, street trees and real camera heights show how the proposal sits in its setting. A building floating on white looks like it is hiding something.

2. Use honest materials

Brick that reads as brick and glazing that reflects the sky build trust. Over-polished finishes invite challenges later when the built result looks different.

3. Choose the right light

Overcast or soft daylight shows form and material best. Save the sunset for marketing.

4. Match key views

Where officers have asked for specific viewpoints, render from those exact positions so images can be compared with photographs.

5. Keep the set consistent

Use one lighting and material set across every image. A consistent package reads as one clear proposal and is easier to update when the design changes.
